Flipping a House: Renovating

For the second part of our Flipping a House series, we’ll be discussing how to flip and renovate a house! Read our previous blog, Flipping a House: Buying, to be the most informed. Start off your renovation on a good foot: hire a home inspector. The evaluation will give results on the house’s:

  • HVAC system

  • interior plumbing

  • electrical systems

  • roof

  • attic / basement (if applicable)

  • floors

  • windows and doors

  • foundation

  • structural components

As we said in our previous blog post, Flipping a House: Buying, start your home flipping experience by doing cosmetic repairs and appliance updates with your first renovation.

Along with your first renovation, you should start building relationships with contractors—you can’t do everything by yourself, and some things have to be left to professionals. There are many types of

contractors, such as:

  • general contractors

  • electricians

  • roofers

  • plumbers

  • painters

  • HVAC experts

There are also people well-rounded in different areas. Get references and look at the reviews of different contractors, and schedule them to walk through the house with you and talk about your plans for renovation in order to get comparable quotes. Don’t be afraid to try multiple different ones to find people you work well with.

After the home inspection results get in and you choose a contractor, you can start renovations! Schedule them to start working the same day you settle on the property.

Remember your end goal: to gain a profit after selling the house! Make good decisions regarding any problems during the renovation and stay within your budget. Follow through with the renovations you decided on previously and be patient throughout the process.
