Conserving Heat During The Winter
Florida, known as the Sunshine State, is a destination for many people during winter break. Even in December, people can be found on the beaches suntanning. However, many Floridians still struggle with staying warm in their own houses. Read more for some of our tips for conserving heat in your home!
First, understand how your heating system works to be able to use it in the best and most cost-effective way:
Research upgrading to a different heating system. With modern technology, some systems can control the temperature of every room in a house, while others can be operated from a mobile app. Research different systems to find what would work best with your lifestyle.
Turn your thermostat down lower than usual, but just by a little! Reducing it by even 1 degree will save you energy and money, and you won’t even notice!
Next, look into making some minor home improvements:
Schedule a test for leaks from a utility company. Some companies will do a free, thorough test.
Check the insulation in your roof and walls. These can be places where heat easily escapes. You should have at least 12 inches of insulation in the roof, and your walls should be insulated as much as possible.
Check if your windows need replacing. Consider fitting double or triple glazing windows, since both reduce heat loss. You could also get secondary glazing, which is a second pane of glass put in an already existing window. This is almost effective as the two other methods, but also costs less.
Fit drought-proofing onto your windows and doors, and also any holes and gaps in loft hatches, floorboards, electrical fittings, etc.
Insulate your hot-water tank by placing a jacket over your tank, or buy a tank already covered with foam.
Replace your light bulbs to more energy-efficient ones, as these release less heat.
Finally, start getting into the habit of these small tasks:
Open your curtains when it’s sunny to let the warmth in, and close them at night and when it’s cloudy.
Wear an extra layer to keep yourself warm!
